Oceans of Thread Detail #1
Lighthouse

I loved this block of the month from first sight, but immediately envisioned the lighthouse with the water and mountain in the background. I contemplated piecing it in, but decided to use thread work instead. Because of the dense quilting on this block, the whole quilt became heavily thread embellished to keep it balanced. About a dozen different threads are used in this block alone!

Treasure chest

I added the couched yarn seaweed and reworked the jellyfish that was in Roz and Laura’s pattern. The wood grain (which particularly impressed my husband) is stitched with a variegated rayon thread. I love the cloisonné starfish and seahorse charms!

Oceans of Thread Detail #3
Walrus and pelican

The original block was folded flowers. I liked the idea of a dimensional block, but wanted something that I felt fit better with the ocean theme. I love to do origami and found a seal pattern that I changed slightly to make a walrus. He needed a pal, so I added the paper-pieced pelican (say that ten times fast!). The pelican’s fish and the whale tail are bone beads from Alaska.
